Swinging a run on the Eel River

There’s a special charge in the air this time of year. The mornings get colder, the rivers start to rise, and the first true pushes of winter steelhead begin to slip into our Northern California waters. For many anglers—and for me as a guide—this isn’t just another season. It’s the heartbeat of our year.

Winter steelhead have a way of grounding you. They make every cast feel important, every swing feel electric, and every day on the river feel like it matters.

Rivers on the Rise, Fish on the Move

Right now, the Trinity River is shaping up beautifully. Early fish are already showing, and each storm adds a little more life and color to the system. The Lower Sacramento, while known for its trout, also becomes a powerful backup option for those wanting steady action between steelhead swings.

And then there’s the coast—our wild card. Coastal rivers can go from low and glassy to fishable overnight, and when the timing lines up, those ocean-bright fish provide some of the most unforgettable moments an angler can experience. Weather-dependent? Absolutely. Worth it? Every single time.

Beyond Spey: More Ways to Get on the Water

NorCal Spey has grown, and I’m proud of it. While two-handers and swung flies will always be at the heart of what I do, I now offer:

Indicator-style steelhead trips

Light conventional tackle options

Trout-focused days on the Lower Sac

Custom full-day experiences for beginners or seasoned anglers

Every trip is tailored. Every day is built around creating that moment—the grab, the run, the connection that keeps this whole sport alive.

Why This Window Matters

From late November through January, we’re in that sweet spot: enough early fish to keep you sharp, and enough incoming storms to make every week feel different from the last. Conditions change quickly, and when they’re right, the fishing can be phenomenal.

If you’ve been thinking about booking a day on the water, now is the time.

Let’s Hit the Water

Whether you want to swing flies on the Trinity, chase chrome on a coastal river, or put a bend in the rod with Lower Sac trout, I’ve got open dates and the rivers are shaping up.

Winter steelhead season is here—let’s make it count.
